The project houses multiple doubles that produce new social and architectural conditions through their overlays. First, a test kitchen and a full-service kitchen are intertwined. The particular disposition of distinct-yet-similar elements between these two programs reorganizes public and patron traffic patterns within local Harvard Square. Back-of-house components of one are visibly displayed to another, playing out the performance of preparation within space of final consumption. Occupant movement occurs laterally in plan, intersecting with goods and supplies whose circulation occurs in section. Public circulation (both vehicular and pedestrian) are drawn into and through the architectural interior as paths that alleviate existent congestion at a busy block corner and link to a broader network of urban movement. The lot’s backyard is reinvented as a park for the public accessed through these new paths. Typical boundaries between inside and out, public and private realms, individual and communal relationships as well as production and consumption are manipulated, calling their social legislations into question in the design of this community kitchen.
